What is Balancer?

Balancer is an automated market maker built on the Ethereum blockchain.

Users can gain liquidity or add their own assets to three main types of pools on Balancer:

  1. Shared pools - for liquidity providers who can earn additional rewards.
  2. Smart pools - powered by smart contracts.
  3. Private pools - governed by the owner. Similar to smart pools but not powered by smart contracts.

Balancer is similar to Uniswap and Curve, tokens are balanced without price affecting the weight however this time Ethereum is not needed and more than one token can be used.

Blockchain developers can create their very own liquidity pools and decentralized financial apps. Balancer offers open-source, permissionless infrastructure to get you started.

You can even launch a new token thanks to the Liquidity Bootstrapping feature. This distributes the token fairly to build meaningful communities and long lasting projects. New projects can use this to create engagement and raise capital.

The Balancer token

The native token for Balancer is BAL.

Primarily it’s a governance token used to vote within the Balancer ecosystem.

Those who provide liquidity to pools on Balancer are paid in BAL token for participating. These are paid out every week and directly to the user.

BAL is swapped on Balancer for veBAL to begin the governance process.

To control inflation and the supply, 145,000 BAL were minted. veBAL was introduced to lower the emissions and keep Balancer valuable.
